Can anyone tell me what the diff of scrub and jog are ? And what is Looped Segment Mode ? quite a few prefs for them too under prefs / audio / playback
Scrub is moving through the project with monitoring on like the sound of speeding up and slowing down a tape deck to find something Jog is moving through the project with monitoring off
Now that I'm assigning mouse modifiers I wanted to know more about jog and scrub. Both monitor the media while performing. Jog appears to be a fast forward/rewind letting you go quickly across the audio while hearing it. Dragging the Edit Cursor Handle invokes it. Ctrl drag does Scrub. Alt drag does Jog looped segment mode and Ctrl + Alt drag does Scrub looped segment mode using the default mouse modifiers. Scrub seems to be the effect of taking a reel to reel and manually turning the reels so the tape slowly moves across the live head producing the audio. This is ideal for minute adjustments needed in cueing something up. The "looped-segment-mode" of both jog and scrub appear to jog over a loop as defined in Prefs / Audio / Playback / Looped-segment-mode ms to ms. Default is -88 ms to 0 and I changed mine to -999ms to 0 so I can hear a second of media. I detect no difference in Job or Scrub in looped segment modes.
Sorry to dig up the old thread. Is there a way to scrub with volume lowered? Like -12 db or something. Sometimes I feel like my ears will bleed while i'm scrubbing.
Wild guess: It differs in the interface. A jog/scrub wheel is a combination of two different approaches. One is a stepped wheel with which you can move wonderfully from frame to frame and the other is wheel with a limit and a spring. So you don't dial the wheel but move it against a force and the amount of power needed translates in faster movement in your application. Have a look at the construction and operation of the Contour Shuttle Pro 2 e.g.
Scrubbing is slowly moving the cursor over the audio to find an edit point by ear. This technique goes back to the days of tape editing where you would slowly turn the reels to find a good place to splice. Jogging is quickly moving the play cursor to a new location in the timeline.
