(duplicated a post of mine from another thread but it seems relevant here) check this site over on the kvr forum there are regular competitions to make a track using only one freeware synth. this site collects together all the entries so, for instance, you can find perhaps 25 tracks made solely with synth1. should give you a very good idea of what the synths featured sound like.

You guys managed to forget Atlantis? Puts a lot of the payware to shame and ships with a fantastic multi-effect as well. :D

So I went crazy and downloaded a bunch of synths (thanks everybody for the amazing suggestions, really helpful!) But I'm having trouble using them in Reaper. I go to Preferences, VST and click "add" I select the folder where I house the plugin and then hit scan, apply, and then ok. They're not showing up. :/ Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

Make sure you select the correct filter on the left side (VST, DX, VSTi, DXi, etc). Reaper organizes things beautifully for the user. Also make sure you don't have anything accidentally leftover in your filter field, that may be messing things up your search as well. Other than that, make sure the DLL files are installed correctly in your VST folder - and try possibly doing a rescan/clear cache - it should work fine after all that. Ben

Asynth, taurus and synth-1 are all killer. Quantum64 is unstable and hard to find but sounds amazing. For nice pianos or other sampled stuff, I've found myself using commercial romplers. But those four above do all of the VA stuff anyone would need.

Synth1 is the gateway freebee. The most popular configuration is 16bit, 44.1k with ASIO buffer set at 256 or 512.
