I am new to this world and very excited to be here!! I recently upgraded to Reaper and I'm loving it. Today I wanted to pick out a few new synth's to play with so I searched for some freeware. I noticed that there are so many free vst plug ins available. After spending some time, I'm finding I like so many! It's so hard to decide, help? What are some of your favorites, and why do you like them?

Synth1, Voyager, Crystal, Elektrostudio synth pack, TAL synths. Just get them all and you'll hear why we like them :)

I'm personally fond of Krakli, Ugo, and H.G. Fortune synths. But for the most part, these are considered staples by many (just google each name with vsti added): Oatmeal Crystal Synth-1 Superwave P8 Triangle I and II Linplug Free Alpha PolyIblit SQ8L Chimera MiniMogue VA Adonis Pro There's also a site called "burnies list" or "burnies free list" or something to that effect that has a list and sound demos of the best of the best.

LFX luxonix it's worth it for the tremolo alone ( try to find another one). but it comes with plenty of other effects such as overdrive, reverb, stereo panning and it's very light on the cpu. the #1 free plugin to have IMO oh and you gottta have synth1 because it's like a legend for VSTs

if you are new to all of this a very worthy download would be synth1 - probably the most talked about free vst synth on the planet. it sounds good, is extremely stable (i don't think it's ever crashed or 'hiccuped' for me) and has a good, intuitive interface for a newcomer. oatmeal is another great synth but it is a bit more advanced than synth1. there are also some very good synths that come on the computer music magazine disc - zebraCM, fabfilter one CM Edition, rhinoCM and alphaCM are all great synths.
