I have advocated a similar idea for years, that is, have a firewire box with expandable memory slots. Operate the sampler in the box as a plug in but keep all of the processing in the box. In other words, all of the OS functions would be software operating as a plug in like Mach five. All sound libraries would reside on the host computer and get streamed into the DSP and memory of the box. If necessary, have light pipe out back to the host computer. Or it might be possible to just stream the audio back through the plug in itself. In essence a Giga in a box without the OS. there may be real reasons why this would not work, but I have not heard them yet. I do not claim to be technically knowledgable about this, it is just a hair brained idea. Incidently, the TC Powercore is in essence the same idea. but it is just dsp i believe. However this idea extended to plug in support could be great: a box full of slots, expandable and chainable. When you buy a plug in or instrument, you get the software and the DSP. The DSP you get is keyed to that plug in and therefore you do not need iLoks etc. If you need more dsp for that plug in, buy more from the developer. Digi could sell the box and have reserved dsp for dig plug ins and mix functions. Another example: Kyma.
