I just bought a pair of Mackie MR5's... great sounding, great features. One of the best in that price range.

I'd agree with bullshark that you should listen first and get something that sounds nice to you. The problem with that though is you can't listen to the different speakers in your room. Maybe you can find a store where you can haave a listen, buy something and then take back and swap for something else if they sound terrible in your room?

If you can then definitely take a listen to a few sets of speakers before you part with your cash. You'd be surprised at how different they can sound from one another. I went through this process last week, listening to a range of different speakers, some of which I was looking forward to hearing but upon doing so was surprised at how much I disliked them.

I have a friend who does a lot of audio stuff, and bought Wharfdale's. he said they work ok, I know you don't necessarily want speakers for monitoring that sound "good" you want speakers that reflect the mix accurately. On my friends recommendation of the brand, I was considering these, as they aren't even that expensive.... Wharfedale DP8.2A The others I was considering were Event Audio bi-amplified speakers off of ebay. Can't afford the expensive stuff...

i think samson makes a sort of a7 active knockoff that's supposed to be pretty well regarded...and they're pretty cheap. do a search for samson rubicon or resolves. they should be in your price range. also, you could probably find a cheaper set of older event monitors that are pretty decent, if not spectacular. i think behringer makes a couple sets that are around that price too. happy hunting! k

quote:boot_me, i owned the wharfs for a while. i'm not saying that i'm that good at mixing, but man, mixing was really tough for me using those. lows were nearly non-existant (check below 80 hz), and the mids were a lie. sure, i probably could have gotten used to them after another year, and rolled off the lows because i couldn't hear them any way, but i instead replaced them with the york passives, which was a BIG improvement. I don't think that my friend has exactly these. He bought his a year or more back, from Guitar Center. Anyways, I wish I could afford the Adam A7's, but was considering buying a set of used Event Project Studio 8 monitors off ebay. Anyone like those? Thanks bm

I have a pair of Tascam VL-A8s, which I upgraded from the older VL-X5 line (wanted a bit more low-end). I demoed them at Guitar Center here with a CD of music I like against several others. For the price-point I was amazed at their honesty in the lows/mids/highs. I've used them now as my primary monitors for a couple of months. So far I have no complaints. They're a little more than $300, around $350 shipped in the states (no idea about the UK). I'd recommend at least auditioning them if you can.
