Can reaper be used to compose via midi?

Still need help with midi! 

Do any of you know how to set up reabanks? I've not got very far with triggering and of the sounds on my jv1080 yet, but I have managed to select my MOTU 828 in 'midi hardware output'. I suspect a reabank is what i need and have downloaded one for the jv1080. I just don't know how it works - do I use it as a vst instrument or effect? Thanks Tom

Perhaps from another forum member will help.

insert virtual instrument on new track allows choosing a vst instrument. Then u arm the track and record midi input. It relies on having the vst folder path set up and having the midi device set up. The manual is your friend.
