I had the same problem using the Digi MIDI interface. I tried disconnecting all other USB, using powered hub, powering the digi Interface etc I could not get it to consistantly stay in communcation with the Pre. I did discover though that despite the irritating message, the Pre was receiving MIDI messages and responding correctly. but every five minutes or less the error would come up. I have stopped using it in remote mode.

I'm remembering having a similar problem setting up some PREs I do not remember the exact solution it was ether improper MIDI cable patching or PRE assignments in the IO Setup

I have 3 Grace Designs M802R 8-ch Mic Preamps (they work on the same protocol as the Digidesign PRE) and I've had similar weirdness with the same error message. Strange though it may sound, I was able to get rid of the problem once and for all by replacing my USB hub (a DLink DHB7 I believe) with a different type (Belkin I think?) When I would check in the Audio Midi Setup, sometimes there would be 3 or 4 copies of my little M-Audio 2x4 Midi interface in there. I would have to delete all the extras, and reboot and it would be fine for a while... The best advice I can give is that you should make sure that your MIDI interface is on a solid USB connection. My setup is working great now! Cheers, eh?
