Subtitles not showing up

I have yet to search through the forums for a solution to the problem I'm about to lay out, so if there is already a pre-existing thread on the matter, my apologies. I'm currently trying to encode my copy of Blood - The last Vampire (an anime). The problem I'm having is that both Gordian Knot and AutoGk keep failing to apply the subtitles to the movie. The movie itself encodes perfectly; both audio and video. However, there is japanese audio mixed in with english as well during the movie, and they have english subtitles that are supposed to show up whenever someone is speaking in japanese. It is these subtitles that are not showing up. When using Robot4rip prior to using Gordian Knot, it lists two subtitle options. "English (normal caption)" and "English". I have tried encoding with both, and to the best of my knowledge chose the right subtitle file for each encode. No subtitles show up during play. When using Autogk, it shows -four- subtitle options; two english wides and two english letterboxes. I've tried encoding with each one that way, and still no go. I don't have a log to go with this at the moment, although I can post one later if need be (about to go off the net for a bit). If someone has an idea of why it might not be showing the subtitles / not adding them, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think that the reason the subtitles show up during play of the DVD is because of the IFO, it calls to the subtitle file at that point in time. Since there are no ifo's for divx/xvid/x264, there is no reason for the subtitles to appear. You could force them with Avisynth, using the Vobsub plugin.

refer to the avisynth manual. Look under external plugins, subtitles. you do need the subtitles pre ripped, but you may already have that.

hmm... I think it might be more of a GK/AGK issue, but I never had any problems with them, so I have no idea what went wrong.

Hello, I have this problem on some of my encodes. Here's what I've worked out: IF the movie you're encoding is not on PGC 1 (ie., PGC2 or higher), then AutoGK doesn't seem to like encoding subtitles using the normal (step 2) subtitle menu. Has anyone else noticed this problem with AutoGK??? I'm using DVDDecrypter v3.5.1.0; DVDSubEdit v1.322; AutoGK v2.27. Here's what I do to get around my version of the problem when I'm encoding something with subtitles which is not written on PGC1 of the VTS (this may also be useful for some other people with different subtitle problems): DVDdecrypter: Rip the relevant PGC off of the dvd, like normal, using DVDdecrypter. DVDSubEdit: When DVDDecrypter is done, I open the files I've just put on my HDD with DVDSubEdit (in DVDSubEdit: FILE -> open VOB file(s), highlight all the VOBs which DVDdecrypter has just made). It takes its time to scan through them, be patient. Select the correct set of subtitles, using the first drop-down (usually starts by saying "All Streams") in the area at the top right of the program ("Subpic selection"). Check that this is the correct set of subtitles (with the little scroll thing under the picture). (NB, this program doesn't show ALL the stills of the video, only the ones that correspond to a subpicture. ie., only the frames that have a caption.) When you've found the right set, hit "Run OCR" in the bottom right area of the program ("Optical Character Recognition (OCR)"). At this point I like to read through all the subtitles and make sure the OCR has recognised all the symbols properly & change any incorrect ones and the like (all within the "Optical Character Recognition (OCR)" box). Now hit the "Save as .srt" button. I like to save this to the same folder as the DVDdecrypter output. AutoGK: Open the IFO file, and then name a place to save the output to, just like normal. Now hit Ctrl+F8. An "External subs" field appears, in this, find the saved ".srt" file, made with DVDSubEdit. Complete the rest of the options as if the video does not have any subtitles (ie., "Step 2:" -> "Subtitle track(s)" -> "no subtitles". And "Step 4 (optional):" -> "subtitle options", make sure both tick boxes are are UNchecked) I realise this thread may have gone a bit dead by now, I'm replying this late because I joined doom9 when the thread was still fresh, and then there was a 5 day cooling off period, and i went away to another country (on holiday, not out of anger). Now I'm back. I hope it helps someone who's having difficulties. Also, I've tried to make this post as easy to follow as possible. I am by no means an expert, i just encode quite a lot of stuff. I appologise if this post either doesn't go into enough detail for you, or if you feel a little like I'm patronising you, or maybe both. I find it hard to come across as sincere on message boards (you can't tell my tone of voice from what I've written), and I'm new to this one. Please don't lynch me if I've got something wrong. thanks P.S. feel free to add to this yourselves with any advice you can offer, or ask me a question if you still dont get it, or i've not explained a part particularly well.
