sounds like the idle control valve needs cleaning. more information can be found by doing a search in the facility at the top of the page, highlighted in yellow..
I thought I was the only one with this problem of engine cutting out and I blamed myself for exercising ineffectual clutch control. I bought my S40 in January after sadly sending my beautiful 740 to the Volvo graveyard. I discovered quite quickly that 'this new' secondhand car I had just bought kept on stalling at the most inconvenient moments (despite never having this problem with any car I have ever driven since 1972!). The worst time it happened I was turning right and it stalled on the wrong side of the road, broadside to oncoming traffic. Fortunately the road was quite quiet and the oncoming vehicle was quite a distance away before making the turn. Each time the car has stalled has been as described by alex volvo 1. When the car goes to the garage in a few weeks, I can now take proof that the car is at fault! Thanks everyone. Volvogal 1
I am having this problem with my V40 diesel. The fault (DTC ECM1826 or ECM1882 as car has both faults) is related to a leak from the EGR valve connector pipe. I just need to get the bloody dealer to get his finger out and get it sorted!
if its the gdi engine its almost certainly carbon build up on comps such as valves throttle bodies etc. has been reported on cars with mileages below 30K
I cured the same fault on my V40 td by cleaning out the pipes to the exaust gas recyle system. If you only use your car for short journeys, the pipes get gunged up and need cleaning out. Also pressure builds up in the crankcase and can damage the crankshaft seals. Easy job to do. The EGR unit is the plastic cylinder on the r/h front of the engine. There are 3 pipes connected to it. One comes from the crankcase (bottom l/h inlet) one goes back the the sump (bottom r/h outlet) and one goes to the air intake pipe just past the air filter (top r/h outlet). Also check that your air filter is clean. :) Micro
