hello, i used the big 3 to backup my matrix dvd. i only selected pgc1 from vts2 as it seemed to be enough for the main movie without extras. everything worked okay- the only problem was, that the resulting size of the video ts was 3,4GB - so it wasted 1 gb - what did i do wrong? another question: is it possible to backup only the main movie without menus using the big 3?

Although the big three method is meant to create full backups of your dvds it can be used to make a movie only backup (or at least make this easier). Why you ended up with a 1 GB smaller file? I don't know what bitrate calculation u used? If you use the ccedata.txt from dif4u and have the setting create video_ts using unused vtses on then the bitrate calc will also include things you didn't check and leave less bitrate for your main movie. Resulting in a smaller file. If you want to use it for movie only you can have RA create a script for u with only the main movie. You just have to make sure you set the bitrate right. Also read some movie only guides you can find on doom9
big3 is NOT for creating a movie-only rip (it can be done, but not directly). those are the menus and such from the original dvd, and seem like they take almost 1gb in your case. if you're doing a movie-only rip then you're pretty much have to do it the hard way (manually), or have dvdshrink create a movie-only zero-compression rip and big3 that, or use dvd2dvdr or dvd2svcd or something like that (I don't remember which one) to do that for you.
you mean, i should process it with dvd shrink, uncompressed, and then burn an image with nero, load the image in deamon tools and then process this using the big 3? sounds easy compared to the "movie only" guides - does it work as described?
You can use dif4u to prepare (demux) your assets and RA to create a scenarist script for it. It will take some manual work though (calculating bitrate for encoding). But like already said it's not meant for this in the first place. Try a full dvd backup, quite rewarding I must say! And there are other and probably easier methods to do what you want (as you alreayd got a suggestion for that)
My projects always ended up about 1 meg smaller. This was due to the CCE version I used (2.50.01.00) which seemed to ignore my settings. Upgraded to 2.66.01.07 and now my projects fit perfectly :D
