I like Digi hardware and software. I have tried Session 8 then went to Soundscape and now back to Digi 001. For what I do - live brass bands onto ADAT - then into DIGI for editing it is great. I do not use Midi (don't know how to anyway). I am now thinking of getting full Protools but it is expensive. Nuendo, Soundforge, VST seem ok for midi and sequencing but no match for Digidesign and live audio. I am right aren't I guys. If not tell me before I spend. Karl

Soundforge doesn't do midi at all, incase you thought it did... It is, however a great editing and mastering program. As for midi, I am a novice as well, but I imagine protools has midi capabilities that can stack up to the others.

If you have a digi 001 on a PC and are mastering in Sound Forge, or T-Racks, or something like that, can you monitor through the 001 or do you need a seperate sound card for non-Protools audio programs? Thanks, Steve

Thanks, Steve

Sure, you can use the 001 with your Mastering software. Just make sure it is your prefered audio device in the Windows Control Panel. You can even use the S/PDIF I/O if it is selected in the preferences. You will be limited to Analog I/O 1&2 or S/PDIF I/O but not Analog & Digital at the same time.

Last dumb question: Would the 001 talk to other multitrack programs such as Vegas on the PC? Would i have use of all the ins and outs on the card? Steve

To me, it does not make sense to use Vegas when you have Pro Tools. The reason might be that you already know that program. However, with Pro Tools you will see that there is NO learning effort required. Especially for audio.
I love the fact that the Digi001 (and all digi product lines) are a unified system ie. hardware and software. I'd rather have the Digidesign software engineers adding additional features and tweaking the performance of ProTools LE rather than adding lots of hack code so "el cheapo soundcard" users can use PTLE. As someone has already pointed out, here in Australia every second musician and engineer has a Digi001 rig. The best part is that people are now really collaborating on projects by just bundling sessions up and handing them over to other musicians. Especially since the win/mac compatibility is almost fully sorted now Cheers, Marcus
