Would it be possible to track the number of units in inventory for a product in a similar way prices are being tracked? That is, would it be possible to track changes in inventory over time? For instance: Backcountry provides the exact number of units in inventory it has in stock for each product. So, this number could be tracked continuously over time. Amazon only tells you if the product is in inventoy or not. But when there are 5 or less units, it tells you the exact number of units in stock available.

It would possible (and we already capture the info, I believe), but why would it matter to consumers? I can see the business use of tracking specific inventory numbers, but it seems like consumers are more binary in their inventory needs. That is, is it in stock or isn't it?

It is about when to buy not about business intelligence

It would be great to have this information to decide when to buy the product. If the stock is running high, I would wait and delay the purchase to see if I can get a lower price. But if they are about to run out, I would buy if the price is close enough to what I am willing to pay

Yes, that would be true for many items, but not for some products like books or seasonal clothing that usually are ordered once by the retailer. Thanks for your prompt responses.
