I have a pair of AE22 monitors. Great monitors but I get a lot of really irritating 'interference' when I use Reaper v4 64bit. I do not seem to have this problem with Cubase Essential 5 32bit. I recently upgradeg my computer to an i5 2500K/Asus P8P67LE v3 MOBO and continue to use my old M-Audio 2496 PCI card having downloaded 64bit drivers. I am putting together a braid box to prevent groundloop problems but I am concerned that Reaper seems to be much worse than Cubase. The problem is very definitely connected with Reaper. If I return to the desktop the noise more or less disappears. Click on the Reaper icon and go back into the programme and the noise returns. It does seem to be CPU/HDD related with a series of squeeks, hissing, whining and then a steady humm in tickover mode. I have also noticed that the noise gets progressively worse as new tracks(items)are added which is odd. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I have done a few searches but not found anything conclusive. Thanks Martin
V'ger The noise problem does improve with an increas in buffer size, especially from 256 onwards. I have not experimented with the sample rate as I do not think this is ideal since rendering to CD is at 44,100. More to the point, it really should not be necessary. I think there is something fundamentally wrong with my setup. I suppose it could be the 64bit drivers for the M-Audio 2496 soundcard. I cannot understand why the sound should only be a problem on the main screen (tracks/docker etc). The edit menus are fine but that might be because they are programme functions and therefore not directly audio related. At a loss! Martin

With my onboard and crappy Realtek card, I also get more noise in certain windows (can't remember which at the moment), maybe it's something to do with the graphics there? If you're suspecting drivers, you can check by using the Asio4All one.
Thanks for getting back. I did some searching back over old posts on the Reaper forum and found a few folk with more or less the same problem. In each case, it seems it was Reaper specific and was not an issue with other DAWS. In my case, the comparison is Cubase (32bit). Trouble is, there is no mention of a solution on any of the threads. Troubleshooting isn't half a lonely business! When it rains it pours. Tod - Everything is in midi (East West, Omnisphere, Hypersonic etc). I will try the M-Audio forum and see if I can find anything there. Martin

Ollie Thanks very much for your help on this. Some good points which give me a few new angles to consider. I'll let you know how I get on. I guess it will boil down to trial and error. Regards Martin
I have finally found and resolved the problem care of a member on the Soundsonline forum who posted this link. I went into the Advanced Menu on my BIOS (P8P67LEv3) and simply disabled C1E, C3 and C6 in the Turbo Mode. Since the article covers the subject going back to the early processors I have to conclude this is a Sandy Bridge related problem. I will double check this with Novatech (retailer) next week. Anyway, the problem has gone and with it comes sooooo much relief. Fingers crossed. Thanks to all for your help and interest to date. Very much appreciated. It's hell when things like this happen. Regards Martin
