The problem is a long time bug in the MP3 option. You cannot use the higher quality settings. A work-around seems to be to record the final session on an audio track and bounce (export) to MP3 from the region window. Much faster that way too. An e-mail to tech support on this subject was pointless. This has been a problem since v5.3.1 at least.
